Dry Eyes

What are dry eyes?

Dry eye is when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when they do not make the right type of tears or tear film. Our eyes need tears to stay comfortable and healthy.
When you blink, a film of tears spreads over the eye, keeping the surface smooth and clear. Tear film contributes to perfect vision as well.

What are the treatment options?

Artificial Tears

Eyedrops that are like your own tears is an option for dry eyes. You can use it as often as you need to. If you need to use artificial tears more than six times a day, you should use preservative-free tears. If tears with preservatives are used a lot, the chemicals may start to irritate your eyes.
A prescription eyedrop medication may be recommended to help your eyes make more of their own tears.

Punctal plugs

Your ophthalmologist may suggest blocking your tear ducts with tiny silicone or gel plugs. These are inserted into your tear ducts to make your natural tears stay in your eyes longer. Plugs can be removed later as needed.
